Interview/artikel met Nick: being a gay icon, dating Delta and where he keeps his purity ring

NICK Jonas is sick of hearing the word “transformation”.
But while it may sound like an annoying word Johanna Griggs would use to describe a freshly painted room on Better Homes & Gardens, “transformation” is really the best way to describe the past year of his career.
“It’s interesting, I think that for me I’ve actually gone on the journey myself and had the experiences and lived life — so it’s probably a little bit more shocking for people to have missed all that and just seen me after a few years,” he told news.com.au.
Formerly known for being a purity-ring-wearing Disney star and the youngest brother in tween band the Jonas Brothers, the 22-year-old is now a buffed-up sex symbol whose girlfriend is former Miss Universe Olivia Culpo.
He’s scored a role on US TV show Kingdom — it’s definitely not on the Disney Channel — and dropped trou last year for a photoshoot in his underwear that went viral.
Ditching his two brothers, he’s just released his self-titled debut solo album and is set to play at this weekend’s Mardi Gras Party is Sydney.
A definite shift from his Disney days, his new sound and image seem like they came out of no where. But Jonas says it’s been a long time coming.
“I don’t know if it was a specific moment but it was over time,” he says.
“Just becoming the man that I am today and with that there was a transformation that took place.
“As far as the sexier elements to the music and all that, I think it’s been fun to talk about things that are relevant to me at this point in my life and create music that shows me in a new light to people.”

It’s a similar path Justin Timberlake made after *NSYNC — and the influence is clear.
“I have immense respect for him ... I definitely watched him and tried to learn what I can,” he admits.
He’s also a Kanye fan. His cover of Yeezy’s “Only One” went nuts online last month — and he got the thumbs up from the man himself.
“I actually saw him at that award show (The Brit Awards),” he says.
“It was two days after I recorded his song. I was able to see him in the hallway and gave him a hug and talked to him for a minute before he went on stage and then he said, ‘thanks for the cover, I loved it’ — so that was cool … that was special.”
“(But) I really don’t have those moments with many people — starstruck moments for me ... it’s more (with) athletes.”

His obsession with fitness started when he got cast in TV show Kingdom. He buffed up to score the role of Nate Kulina, a mixed martial arts fighter.
In the latest season to air in the US, it’s hinted the character is gay.
Since then, Jonas has become a poster boy in the gay community — performing at gay clubs and appearing in those Marky Mark-esque photos that went viral last year.
Wearing tighty whities, biting his bottom lip and grabbing his crotch, the photoshoot in Flaunt magazine made the clear point that Jonas was no longer a dorky Disney kid.

But he insists he had no idea they would get the attention they did.
“I didn’t think about that too much as we were doing the shoot,” he says.
“The way people responded afterwards was so bizarre. But it was all lighthearted and good fun — I don’t take myself too seriously when it comes to that.”
But with a father who is a former ordained minister, was he a little embarrassed to have his family see him like that?
“I sent two of the photos to my dad as it was happening,” he says.
“He laughed and said, ‘you know where you get that from, right?’ So he was actually, strangely proud — which is the best way to take it.”
The attention from the gay community has also brought him down under where he’ll perform at this weekend’s Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras Party in Sydney.
He says it’s a “real honour” to be embraced by the community — but don’t expect to see him on stage in a glitter jockstrap.
“No, that it is not what I’ll be wearing,” he laughs.
“Sorry to disappoint anyone. I haven’t picked out what I’m wearing yet — I’m going to leave it to the imagine.”
Jonas is actually quite familiar with Australia. You might remember his brief relationship with Delta Goodrem a few years ago. He was 18 while she was 26. After they split, Goodrem said there was “genuine love” between them.
So do they still talk?
“From time to time,” he admits.
“But we run in different circles these days. But from time to time we talk.
“I think that life is about a journey and growth — and each person that’s a part of your life is meaningful and important. And I think that there is always love there. It’s a part of the journey.
“But I can say now that I’m thankful to have had all the experiences — and that was an important chapter of my life — but I’m thrilled to be in a new chapter.”
And just in case you were wondering, this new chapter doesn’t include a purity ring.
He laughs when asked what he did with the symbolic ring once he was no longer ... ah ... pure.
Did he give it to the girl? Or throw it into the ocean like the old lady in Titanic?
“There was no dramatic thing like Titanic,” he laughs.
“I think it’s in my home somewhere — but I don’t really know to be honest. No dramatic effort in that way.”
